Webring (Infinite Loop)

Curator’s Note
A generative piece that recreates the webring experience — click, discover, click, discover, in an infinite loop. Except now the loop leads nowhere, because all the sites are gone. The piece runs forever, searching for pages that will never load.

Webring (Infinite Loop) is a generative artwork that simulates the experience of navigating a webring — those circular networks of personal websites that were a primary means of discovery on the early web.

In the original webrings, clicking ‘Next’ would take you to the next site in the ring — a random journey through someone else’s corner of the internet. The experience was defined by surprise: you never knew what you’d find next.

This piece recreates that navigation loop, but with a twist: every ‘Next’ click leads to a dead end. The sites in this webring no longer exist. The piece is an infinite loop of 404 errors — a meditation on the circular futility of trying to revisit a web that has been dismantled.

The teal-to-blue gradient shifts with each ‘click,’ creating a slowly evolving color field that represents the passage of time — and the gradual fading of the web’s original promise.
